Just found this very interesting article on importing ESRI ShapeFile maps in WPF.

http://www.c-sharpcorner.com/UploadFile/nschan/ShapeFile02252007134834PM/ShapeFile.aspx

Once I have the Land Rover on the road I'd very much like to bung a PC in there to play music and monitor things like engine temperature, speed, acceleration and so on. While I'm at it, I might as well bung some GPS on there.

The problem is, that there is very little help for application developers who want to write map applications offline. Virtual Earth can be embedded in WPF apps, if you have an internet connection, but if you're offline you need some local data. There are applications like AutoRoute and "MapPoint Europe", which has a C# API, but these are very expensive.

As usual, mapping for the amateur is pretty much out of the window... but that won't stop me trying

Just found a nice WPF control for displaying maps within a WPF app. It works very well, but it still very much in it's infancy. Very little support for shapes, paths and suchlike.

Still needs a web connection though, so not ideal for a Sat Nav implementation - especially if travelling outside the UK!
